Why Argentina’s esports ascent is a movement not to be missed

(Douglas).- In this piece, Frederico Caputi, Sales Manager at Altenar, explores how esports has undergone a dramatic shift from a niche vertical to mainstream popularity in Argentina.

Why Argentina’s esports ascent is a movement not to be missed

Argentina is globally recognised for its footballing legacy, but a new generation is setting its sights on a different arena: esports. What was once an underground activity in internet cafés across the country has grown into a dynamic and increasingly mainstream industry. For Argentina, this marks more than a shift in entertainment. It’s the rise of a digital culture that blends community, competition, and commercial potential.

The shift is driven by more than just audience appetite. Local tournaments are expanding, streaming infrastructure is strengthening, and the influence of regional professional teams is helping build a cultural foundation for esports fandom.

A diverse and mobile-first market

The widespread use of cybercafés gave early exposure to multiplayer gaming culture, while pandemic-related restrictions accelerated digital consumption, sparking new levels of engagement with games like CS:GO, Fortnite, and Rocket League.

Top-tier titles like Counter Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Data 2 and FIFA remain dominant, while mobile-first games like Free Fire are opening new doors - particularly with younger audiences accessing content on mobile-first platform.

Buenos Aires recently welcomed a major international CS2 tournament hosted at the iconic Teatro Gran Rex - a sign of the growing appetite for esports as both a spectator and participatory experience.

In Argentina, mobile is often the primary way fans engage with content - whether watching streams or placing bets. That is why any serious esports strategy must start with mobile optimised design, live interaction and localised content delivery. This shift is critical.

How Altenar is supporting the esports ecosystem

For us, Argentina presents an exciting vertical within a broader strategy for the region. We see esports as a long-term growth vertical in Argentina and across LatAm, especially as local infrastructure improves and regulation becomes clearer.

Our approach in esports reflects the same principle that differentiates the company in traditional sportsbook: robust technology, a flexible UX and an emphasis on localisation. Our offering is built on official data partnerships with 24 providers, giving operators access to comprehensive coverage of major titles - not just pre-match but live, in-play, with high accuracy and speed.

We’re also enhancing this environment with live match tracking, custom scoreboards, and real-time statistics, all tools designed to keep bettors engaged and informed throughout their experience.

Not one market but many

Esports is no longer a peripheral offering. It is becoming central to how younger audiences engage with competitive entertainment. In Argentina, that means new betting behaviours, higher engagement rates, and growing average stakes.

Looking ahead, the key to unlocking esports’ full potential lies in building trust, delivering innovation, and supporting local ecosystems as they mature. At Altenar, our commitment is to help operators seize these opportunities - by combining robust infrastructure with a flexible, local-first mindset.

Our presence in Latin America is well-established, with particularly strong momentum in Brazil, where regulation is driving fast change. But Argentina holds unique promise. It is a market that demands its own approach, and that’s exactly how we see it. We are working with local operators who are navigating the transition into regulation, offering them the flexibility and technology to grow sustainably in a changing environment.

We work to empower operators with local insights, relevant features and the tools to connect authentically with their audience. By having a team on the ground in LatAm, we are well positioned to keep up to date with the latest developments.
